Summer Blog Post – Elon Homes

Hello! What a few months it has been. While we have had so much happen recently we wanted to wait until today to tell you about this one particular story.

On Friday, June 16th we had the privilege to help set up furniture for Elon Homes new foster care facility for young men. As some of you may know, a recent law has passed which changed the year of care for foster children from 18 to 21. This has many benefits for those in the system, such as an opportunity to receive more education (the facility is located next to Johnson C. Smith University) and an opportunity to be better prepared for the world outside. We were honored that over 40 volunteers came out to assist us in moving the furniture into the rooms, 32 young men will now have a bed, dresser, armoire, and desk of their own in their time spent at Elon. We are all excited to see the good that comes out of this, and were blessed to be a part of this progress.

A fun fact for you all today; according to Guinness World Records, the world’s largest bed was 86ft. 11in. long and 53ft. 11in. wide, and was made in the Netherlands in 2011. That’s larger than our entire office area!

Spring Update

Spring is here and we have had many exciting activities over the last month that we wanted to share with you!

First, on Saturday, March 25th, WBT Radio, WFNZ 610am and 107.9 the Link hosted a furniture drive at the Arboretum Shopping Center in South Charlotte. We had a great turn out and were excited to spend the afternoon with the on-air personalities. Ramona (from The Matt and Ramona Show) even bought a dress with our colors to show her support. The afternoon was filled with cornhole, dogs (our Charlotte Site Coordinator Will’s dog Teddy made an appearance) furniture and essential items that will bless the homes of families in need in our community.

Then, on April 1st, we hosted kids’ serve Saturday. Families from across the Greater Charlotte area came to our warehouse and assisted us with sanding, staining, and prepping furniture for our client families. It was wonderful to see families working together to give back to their community. We are excited to continue hosting this in the future so be on the lookout for more family oriented events soon.

Finally, on April 8th, we partnered with the Charlotte Knights, Providence Day, and their Alumni to provide 29 beds to children and their families in our community. Homer, as well as four Charlotte Knights’ baseball players came to our warehouse to pack and fill trucks for the families who would be served that day. At 11:45am five trucks filled with beds and essential furniture headed out from our warehouse and towards families across our city. Client families and Beds for Kids staff were in attendance for the opening weekend game that night. The evening consisted of a live interview over the big screen, a 30 second video about Beds for Kids mission and ended with Beds for Kids Executive Director Daniel Fogarty (with assistance from his daughter, Lily) throwing out the first pitch, which was *definitely* a strike. This was an amazing weekend, which capped off an even better month.

It is because of you and the awareness you raise within our city about our mission that we can serve those in need within our community. We thank you for your continued support, we couldn’t do this without you!

In honor of our Knights event, we have a baseball themed fact for you! The average Major League Baseball team sleeps on 650 different beds (27 per player) throughout the season.

Blogs Are Back

Happy Tuesday! We are excited to announce that our blogs are making a comeback. We are blessed with an abundance of supporters in our mission to positively affect the community we are all a part of. With that in mind, we will start blogging so you, our supporters, can stay in the know with how we are advancing our mission within the community. We will be sharing stories, statistics, items in need, ways you can get involved, and fun facts with you. We look forward to hearing from you so be on the look out for ways you can interact with us via the blog too!

For now, we will leave you with this little fact; last year we delivered 1,881 beds, which, beyond being the same number backwards as forwards, would also stretch 2.2 miles, which is roughly the distance from our warehouse to the Bank of America Corporate Center in Charlotte.

Feel free to contact us at info@bedsforkids.org with any questions and/or inquire about volunteering. We can’t do what we do without the help of volunteers!
